On the Wing
On the WingAs early as the 16th century, Leonardo da Vinci predicted that man could subjugate the air and rise up into it on large wings of his own making. The ability to fly has captured the imagination of humans from the day they started to walk the earth. Herring gulls ‘Larus argentatus’ are large, noisy gulls full of character. They are found throughout the year around our coasts and at large reservoirs and lakes. Adults have light grey backs, white under parts, and black wing tips with white 'mirrors'. Their slightly hooked bills are marked with a red spot. Young birds are mottled brown, like the top one in this shot.

Haymish
HaymishHighland cattle, with their long horns and flowing coats, are instantly recognisable throughout the world. This fine bull with its classic thick coat and majestic flowing horns was enjoying a bite to eat and then very confidently walked over to check out what I had in my bag which was on the floor just out of shot. It took me a while to get it back. Their homeland is the Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland, but this hardy breed has spread to far-flung corners of the world. They can be found foraging at over 10,000 feet in the Andes as well as at sea level here on the Isle of Wight. They are well suited to harsh winter conditions due to their thick, double-layered coats, while they can use their sweeping horns to dig through snow to find food. Folds can always be seen spending time in the Islands lush fields and cope well with the heat of our summer months. These shaggy beasts really are gentle giants and a highly intelligent breed.
